ITEC 845, Advanced Instructional Web Authoring, is the second course in the web authoring sequence for the Department of Instructional Technologies at San Francisco State University. The Web is quickly becoming the de facto medium for publishing in general and is particularly transforming education and training. But those changes are slow to take and transformations that shape the new ‘Web 2.0′ suggest opportunities for this arena but it will take a new breed of instructional designers to coax it through.
The goal of the course is to provide a modest forum for ITEC students to learn more about how the web can be used in teaching, learning and training. The limitations of the semester make this less a call to arms and more a trailhead from which those interested in incorporating web talents into their career paths can begin the journey.
Objectives for 845 include: continue web standards (XHTML, CSS), continue best practices, advanced CSS, table-less web layout, blogging, wikis, online visual learning, social software, RSS (syndicating and publishing feeds).
Because ITEC 845 is an instructional design course, we will not focus on programming skills such as PHP, Javascript or database development. We will however, examine some of these areas but keep our focus on how to use advanced technologies to create effective instruction online.
